Growing up in a military family on the East Coast, Dr. Caffarelli joined the Marine Corps prior to attending thoracic surgery at Stanford School of Medicine, including Chief Residencies in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery and Chief Resident in Thoracic Transplantation. Throughout his tenure at Stanford, he received numerous awards including the John Henry Smith, III, M.D., “Outstanding Surgical Resident of the Year” Award in 2007 and the Western Thoracic Surgical Association, Norman E. Shumway Award in 2009.
Dr. Caffarelli joined Newport Cardiac & Thoracic Surgery, formerly the Raney Zusman Medical Group, in July, in 2010. Trained in some of the most innovative state-of-the-art cardiovascular and thoracic surgical techniques, he has particular interest in all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery, especially valve repairs (both aortic and mitral), bicuspid aortic valve disease and aortopathy, aortic surgery with valve-sparing root procedures, ventricular assist devices, minimally invasive mitral procedures, surgical treatments for intervention of atrial fibrillation.
